to say five or so bullets, willing to go after what feinstein is pushing, dianne feinstein, something on assault weapons. is there something he can go for and win because it seems to me losing will not get him any points. your thoughts? >> i think he's clearly announced that's the direction he's going to go. look, when you have an event like this, i'm very pro-second amendment, but when you see something like this occur, it causes you to think through in terms of your beliefs, do you continues to hold those beliefs given what happened. i still do, and obviously the president is going -- >> what's the smart move though? is it magazine side, mental health and -- >> you just got to it. i would suggest where he can make some significant process is the mental health side of it. when you look at what happens to gabby giffords, at virginia tech. >> give me john hinckley. something on limiting the size of these magazines, getting them down to, say, five or so bullets. willing to go after what feinstein's pushing, dianne feinstein, something on assault weapons. is there something he can go for

't worked. dianne feinstein had her ban and columbine occurred. >> a moment ago you were talking about guns in school, and you said something that made me think that that's something you would agree w.where do you stand on that? >> i don't agree with it. i think the republicans talk about it now. they are going to use that as a way to get around the issue, and the issue is high capacity magazines, and -- and assault weapons. i think david gregory did a magnificent job with the vice president of the nra this morning, and when he says -- he said that he doesn't think the magazine issue has anything to do with it, well, it does. lanza got the guns that his mother had in the house, and he would have taken whatever guns she, and if he had a gun without a high capacity magazine that couldn't shoot more than ten shots, that's all the shots he would have gotten off. he didn't go to the stove and pick his arsenal. he took what his mother gave him. if you had less of those weapons around you'd have more children alive. no matter what mr. lapierre said some of those children died because of the magazi

of the n.r.a. in an article in this morning's "new york times," they quote senator dianne feinstein who was at a news conference on friday, she is the california democrat who is leading an effort to reinstitute a ban on salmt rifles. she wrote -- host: i want to show you more of what she had to say at the news conference yesterday saying that the n.r.a.'s blanket call to narms our schools is nothing more than a distraction. this is more of what she had to say. [video clip] >> if the schools want to hire armed guards, i support that. it's a decision each school district should make and many school districts already have armed guards. in fact 28,300 public schools. that's act 1/3 of all public schools, have armed security staff. in fact, there were two armed law enforcement officers who twice engaged the shooters at columbine. that didn't prevent 15 from being killed and 23 wounded. copies of the sheriff's investigative transcript with exactly what happened are available right at the back of the room. the n.r.a.'s blanket dual arm our schools is really nothing more than a distraction. it'

're seeing dianne feinstein there on the senate floor. it is vacant on the house side. so in truth how much is really going to get done? >> well, gregg, a lot of this negotiations are really taking place between the leadership levels right now. we don't really have to worry about what is happening on the house floor. it's about what is going on at the white house. now, the president today is going to meet with congressional leaders from both parties, both chambers. they will sit down. they will talk about a potential deal. the president might offer something that maybe the republicans could go for. it wouldn't be a sweeping deal. gregg: like what? >> might be something smaller. well, it would be something that could potentially avoid the major tax hikes coming in january. that is the most politically treacherous for these members. they need to find a way to stop taxes going up for everybody. if there is a deal it will probably focus on the range of taxes that are coming. gregg: susan, the house passed a bill that extends all the tax cuts. the senate passed a bill that extends it for everybo
